Sports Equipment Donations

Get Moooving - Thursday, October 16, 2014

Do you have any unwanted or unused sports equipment that you would like to donate to a community project?

The Community Leadership Program in partnership with the Active Living Department is launching a Sports Equipment Library to be housed at the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

The concept of the Sports Equipment Library is to increase access to sports equipment for individuals and families that may not be able to afford or, may wish to trial the equipment before making a purchase. The project is strongly aligned to the Sporting Chance grants program, where applicants can elect to become members of the sports equipment library and borrow equipment – enabling the grant amount to be stretched further to cover participation and membership fees.

To get the library started - we need equipment for people to borrow!

A collection drive will be held on Tuesday 28 October 2014 where the Get Mooving Greater Shepparton Caddy will be visiting local businesses to collect any donated equipment.

If you would like the Caddy to make a stop at your organisation please let me know and nominate a suitable time, or an alternative date.

The Sports Equipment Library will be launched on Saturday 8 November 2014 from 10am - 12noon at the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

Any queries, feel free to contact Belinda Conna on (03) 5832 9432.

Pedometer Challenge FAQ

Get Moooving - Friday, October 10, 2014

When does the Challenge start?

You and your team should start logging your steps from Monday 13 October 2014.

When does the Challenge end?

You and your team should stop logging your steps on the night of Sunday 2 November 2014, and submit your final step count by Friday 7 November 2014.  We have given you an extension due to Melbourne Cup holiday on the Tuesday.

Where do I wear my pedometer?

Your pedometer should be worn on the waistband of your trousers/skirt, in line with your foot. Make sure that it is secure, because if it shifts at all, you won’t get an accurate reading. Never put a pedometer in your pocket because it won’t stay vertical and won’t count your steps accurately.

Do I have to complete the full four weeks of the challenge?

All teams that enter their results for the full four weeks will receive a completion certificate.  Also remember it takes four weeks to start to build a routine, so this is the perfect opportunity.

How many steps should I take per day?

The Heart Foundation suggests a target for adults in 10,000 steps per day. As the 30 minutes recommended minimum will probably work out to be about 3,000 steps, other walking throughout the course of the day is really important. The Heart Foundation, Making Every Step Count is a great resource containing further information on walking and being physically active. To access this resource visit http://www.heartfoundation.org.au/SiteCollectionDocuments/HFW-Make-Every-Step-Count.pdf

How do I log my steps?

All team members need to register their steps daily and then each Monday provide their team leader with their total weekly steps.

When should Team leaders enter their results?

Team Leaders need to enter the team’s steps online via the www.onthemoove.com.au/pedometerchallenge website once a week as follows

Team leader needs to enter steps online on…...

For this time period

Monday 13 October 2014

Monday 6 October – Sunday 12 October 2014

Monday 20 October 2014

Monday 13 October – Sunday 19 October 2014

Monday 27 October 2014

Monday 20 October – Sunday 26 October 2014

Friday 7 November 2014

Monday 27 October – Sunday 2 November 2014

Where do team leaders enter their steps?

When team leaders registered for the challenge they received a login and password, be sure to check your junk email folder.  Visit www.onthemoove.com.au/pedometerchallenge and scroll to the bottom of the page where you will find a button to click on and log in.

Can I see a leader board?

The Leader board will be live on www.onthemoove.com.au/pedometerchallenge after Week 1 results are in. The Leader board will be updated on a regular basis over the course of the challenge.

What does the Leader board show?

The leader board shows the average number of steps walked per team participating  in the challenge. Some teams in the challenge have four people and some have six, so the average number of steps walked is used to determine the rankings.  The leader board will also show the top 10 individual steppers.

The number of people in my team has changed since we started the challenge. Do I need to tell anyone?

The rankings are based on the average steps per team member, so if the number of people in your team changes, please let us know so that we are using the correct figures. Please email your organisation name, team name and the alterations to healthycommunities@shepparton.vic.gov.au

What happens if I forget to wear my pedometer one day?

If you forget to wear your pedometer on a particular day, you can use the step count from another day where you had similar physical activity levels.

I entered the wrong number of steps – how do I change that figure?

Please email healthycommunities@shepparton.vic.gov.au with your organisation name, team name and the details that need to be adjusted.

My pedometer isn’t working, what do I do?

Pedometers range in prices and accuracy therefore on the odd occasion pedometers that the Council provide may be faulty.  If the pedometer stops working please return to Council for a replacement.

If the pedometer is damaged from falling and hitting the ground or dropping in the toilet we will not be able to exchange it.  Higher quality pedometers can be purchased from Sports Stores throughout the municipality.

I will be on holidays during the challenge – do my steps still count?

Yes they do. Just be sure to log them and to give your weekly total to your Team Leader.

What are the prizes?

Several prizes are available throughout the challenge including the following

Most Creative team name—Gift Packs

There will also be spot prizes awarded throughout the challenge

Is my pedometer waterproof?

No, remember to take it off if you’re swimming.

Should I wear my pedometer every day?

Yes – to track your steps and progress accurately, wear your pedometer every day.

Will my pedometer work if I run?

Your pedometer works whether you are running, walking or climbing the stairs, but remember it is just counting the amount of steps you take and not the intensity of those steps.

If you are looking to convert steps visit http://www.takesteps.univerahealthcare.com/stepChartPop.jsp for an idea.

Should I reset my pedometer every day?

We recommend that you reset your pedometer at the start of each day in case it resets during the week and you lose your total steps.  This will also make it easier to ensure you reach the 10,000 step mark each day.

Can I only register my steps at work?

No, steps are registered from when you get up in the morning to when you take it off to go to sleep.

10 Minutes of moderate intensity exercise

Causes slight but noticeable increase in breathing and heart rate, but you can still maintain a conversation

  1,000 Steps

10 Minutes of high intensity exercise

Makes you ‘huff and puff’ and taking a full breath between sentences is difficult

            2,000 Steps

Mooving towards a more sustainable Pedometer Challenge

Get Moooving - Tuesday, June 10, 2014
Greater Shepparton City Council is committed to a more sustainable way of operating.

Changing to a less waste driven society is something all of us need to be aware of. Using pedometers for just a month or so and then throwing them away is wasteful and harmful to the environment. The pedometers contain batteries and other electronic components that are toxic and contribute to contamination for our landfills. Further, the manufacture of pedometers relies on fossil fuel, the consumption of which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Given most of the pedometers are in excellent working order, we should try to use them again.

Therefore, in planning the 2014 Pedometer Challenge, the following considerations have been made.

  • Council will hold a collection drive to gather and redistribute working pedometers. If you have a stockpile at home these can be returned to the Council Offices or Aquamoves. Alternatively we can arrange to collect the pedometers from your office. If you plan to participate again, please re use your old pedometer.
  • A minimal order of pedometers will be made for the 2014 challenge. These pedometers will have a step count function only, which will count up to 99,999 steps. These pedometers are $3.20 cheaper per unit than those purchased in previous years, which included distance travelled, calories expended and current time and time spent walking functions. Higher quality pedometers with these functions will be available to purchase from Aquamoves prior to the challenge, though are not necessary to complete the challenge. More information regarding the purchase of these will follow closer to registrations.

More than 7,000 participants have taken part in the pedometer challenge over the six years the challenge has been running. We would like to see the continued growth of this program, while ensuring continual improvement by investigating ways to ensure our practices are as sustainable as possible.

The Pedometer Challenge will run from 6 October 2014, with registrations from early September.

Sponsorship opportunities range from whole program to specific events, and can be discussed further with Belinda Conna on (03) 5832 9432.

Facilitator Expression of Interest

We also seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons or organisations who would like to facilitate an activitiy within the program. Program facilitators will be recognised in the Activities in the Park promotional material, therefore providing ample opportunity to promote their service.

An Activities in the Park Program Facilitator Expression of Interest can be downloaded from the Get Mooving website, and contains a program overview and guidance for applicants.
