December Healthy Lunch Option

Aloha Rice

Kids will love this Hawaiian-inspired dish, and it's perfect for lunchboxes!

Serves 4

Preparation time: 15 minutes


1/2 carrot

1/2 celery stick

1/2 small red or green capsicum

2 spring onions

1 can pineapple rings in natural or unsweetened juice

2 slices reduced fat and reduced salt ham

4 cups cooked rice

4 tbs sweet corn kernels

Cracked black pepper, to season

2 tbs reduced fat salad dressing (made from a healthier oil such as canola, sunflower or olive oil)


1. Wash the carrot, celery, capsicum and spring onion and pat dry with paper towels

2. Grate the carrot and put into a mixing bowl

3. Slice the celery finely and add to the bowl

4. Remove the seeds from the capsicum. cut into small squares and add to the bowl

5. Cut the root end off the spring onion. Slice finely, then add to the bowl

6. Cut the pineapple into small squares and add to the bowl

7. slice the ham into small squares and add to the bowl with the cooked rice, sweet corn, pepper and dressing

8. Using a spoon, mix thoroughly

9. If not using at once, cover with cling wrap (or transfer to storage container) and refrigerate until needed

November Healthy Summer Snack

Iced Fruit Kebabs      


A fun healthy snack that the kids will enjoy making and enjoy eating even more.

Makes 8

Preparation time: 20 minutes (plus 1 hour freezing time)


1kg watermelon

200g strawberries                                   

3 large mangoes 

3 kiwi fruit

8 bamboo skewers

*all fresh fruit and vegetables automatically qualify for the Heart Foundation Tick

  • Remove the rind and seeds from the watermelon, cut into 1 1/2cm thick slices and use a star cutter to cut shapes from flesh.
  • Cut the strawberries in half.
  • Cut the cheeks from the mangoes stone, remove the skin then cut each cheek into thick slices.
  • Remove the skin from the kiwifruit and cut into 1 1/2cm thick slices
  • Thread the fruit onto bamboo skewers and place on a paper-lined non stick baking tray. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for 1 hour or until solid.

    Bloomers - Growing your health

    Encourgaing older adults from all cultures and nationalities to get into the garden and grow their health.

    Learn and share knowledge with others including younger generations about gardening, food, harvesting and cooking whilst enjoying social activities with others.

    The Bloomers program will focus on activities in the Community Garden at KidsTown.

    Elements of program will include:

  • Build garden plots
  • Plant seeds and/or seedlings
  • Cultivate plants
  • Harvest produce
  • Repeating the planting-to-harvest process on an ongoing basis for each gowing season
